Eye health of the Students
Minus power of eyesight, also known as myopia or nearsightedness, is a common condition that affects many children. It means that your child can see things clearly up close, but not far away.
There are many possible causes of myopia in children,
- Genetics,
- Environment,
- Lifestyle.
- Spending more time indoors doing near-focused activities (such as computer work, video games, and reading) have higher rates of myopia.
Myopia can progress as your child grows, and may increase the risk of some eye diseases later in life,
such as cataract, glaucoma, and retinal detachment. Therefore, it is important to monitor your child's eye health and ensure that any symptoms of myopia are checked by an eye doctor. They can prescribe glasses, contact lenses, or other treatments to correct your child's vision and slow down the progression of myopia.
One of the treatments that may help control myopia in children is low-dose atropine eye drops. These are drops that you put in your child's eye each night at bedtime. They may prevent the eye from growing too long, which is the main cause of myopia.
Another treatment option is peripheral defocus contact lenses. These are special lenses that have different areas of focus. The center of the lens corrects your child's distance vision, while the outer portions of the lens blur the side vision. This may slow down the eye growth and limit myopia.
A third treatment option is orthokeratology, or Ortho-K. This is a contact lens that your child wears overnight to flatten the cornea, the front surface of the eye. This temporarily corrects your child's vision during the day, and may also slow down the eye growth and myopia.
These treatments are not suitable for everyone, and they may have some side effects or risks. You should consult with your eye doctor to find out the best option for your child. They can also advise you on how to care for your child's eyes, such as limiting screen time, encouraging outdoor activities, and having regular eye exams.
